Biography

Bernard Goodman was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, on the 22nd April 1896, the son of Michael and Bridget Goodman (née Melia). He resided with his parents and seven siblings at 270. Beaufort Street, Liverpool.

On completing his education, he became a labourer in a rope works before he joined the Mercantile Marine as a trimmer on steam ships.

He signed on as a trimmer in the Engineering Department on board the Lusitania during her final voyage, and when the great liner sank off the Old Head of Kinsale, southern Ireland, he was counted amongst the survivors. He was aged 19 years.

Bernard Goodman continued to serve in the Mercantile Marine until his retirement. By the time he retired, he was employed as a stores man and greaser.

He died suddenly at the Southern Hospital in Liverpool on the 22nd March 1967, aged 71 years. He was buried in Ford Cemetery, Liverpool. He never married.
