Biography

George Whitmore was born in Bermondsey, London, England, on the 18th March 1888, the son of William and Mary Whitmore.  The family home was at 44. New Church Street, Bermondsey, London.

On the 13th July 1912, George married Selina Poate in Southwark, London, and in 1915, they lived at 102, New Church Street, Bermondsey, London.  The couple had six children – Selina, William G., George W., James, Lilian S., and Joseph.

He was a professional seaman in the British mercantile marine and engaged on board the
Lusitania as a fireman in the Engineering Department on 30th April 1915, at New York, at a monthly rate of £6.10s.00d, (£6.50), for what was to be her final voyage across the Atlantic.

He was lucky enough to survive the sinking which took place just seven days later.  He was aged 27 at the time.

George continued to serve in the mercantile marine following his ordeal, and later resided at 32. Clifton Buildings, Noel Street, Tower Bridge Road, London.
