Biography

George Gallagher was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, on the 20th April 1896, the son of John and Sarah Gallagher (née Garnett). His father was a dock labourer and George was the youngest of four children in the family.

His parents died while he was a child, and he was taken in by his uncle, John Garnett, and his family. By 1915, the family resided at 65. Highgate Street, Liverpool.

He served as a fireman in the Engineering Department on board the Lusitania and was killed when she was sunk.

As his body was never recovered and identified after the disaster, he has no known grave and is thus commemorated on the Mercantile Marine Memorial at Tower Hill, London. He was aged 19 years.
