John McEvoy was born in Jonesborough, County Armagh, Ireland, in 1861. Nothing is known about his family or early life.
He married around 1891, but no details of his wife is known and they had one child.
He was a professional seaman in the British Mercantile Marine, and served on board the final voyage of the Lusitania as a refrigerating greaser in the Engineering Department.
He survived the sinking.
John McEvoy continued to serve on ocean liners for many years after his survival, primarily on the Lusitania’s sister ship, the RMS Mauritania.
