Oliver Barrow Smith

Biography

Oliver Barrow Smith was born on the 1st January 1888, the son of Joseph and Ellen Jane Smith of 229, Litherland Road, Bootle, Liverpool, Lancashire.

Nothing more is known about him or his service with the Mercantile Marine except that he served as a ship's cook in the Stewards' Department on board the
Lusitania and he did not survive the sinking.

His body was never recovered and identified and his name is embossed on the Mercantile Marine Memorial at Tower Hill, London.  He was aged 27 years.  He is also commemorated on the municipal war memorial in Stanley Road, Bootle, Merseyside.  His name is not on a bronze panel on the main memorial, but on a semi-circular wall around it, where later additions are displayed.
