Biography
Samuel Scantlebury served as a sculleryman in the Stewards' Department on board the
Lusitania.
According to a document held in the Cunard Steam Ship Company Archive collection in The University of Liverpool, he was ordered by the General Manager's Office in Liverpool to transfer to the steamer
Carpathia, but refused!
Although he survived the subsequent sinking of the Lusitania, he could have saved himself the ordeal, had he complied with the order!
