Walter Scott Quarrie was born in Peel, Isle of Man, on the 29th April 1893, the son of James and Annie Quarrie (née Cowell), of 23, Primrose Avenue, Douglas, Isle of Man. He lived at 20, Moore Street, Peel Road, Bootle, Liverpool, Lancashire.
Having qualified as a sea-going engineer, he was making his first voyage on board the
Lusitania serving as Ventilating Engineer. Tragically, his first voyage became his last, as he was killed when she was sunk.
His body was not found and identified afterwards and as a consequence, he is commemorated on the Mercantile Marine Memorial at Tower Hill, London. He was aged 22 years.
He is also commemorated on Douglas' war memorial which is situated on the sea front on Douglas Bay, Isle of Man. His and the names of many others are inscribed in white lettering on a slate tablet under the words: -
